Pollinator Project
Our Future Depends on Pollination and Pollinators. Our Pollinator Project educates the public about native plants species that support the insects that pollinate them. During the winter months we distribute free locally grown seeds, offer winter seed sowing workshops, maintain the pollinator garden at Historic Wayside Park, help maintain the native plant beds around the Petersburg square, and have collaborated with the Department of Transportation and Pheasants Forever to create a small prairie on the NW corner of Rts. 97 & 123. Follow our Blog posts about native plants and seeds.
Flowering plants and the animals that pollinate them are responsible for one out of every three mouthfuls of food and beverage we consume. Pollinators are also crucial for production of many dyes, medicines and fibers. Pollinators are also part of the intricate web that supports the biological diversity in natural ecosystems that helps sustain our quality of life. The next time you bite into a juicy peach or crunchy apple, or enjoy the beauty of prairie flowers you can thank a pollinator!
