Hill Prairie Ramble

May 30 @ 9:00 am

Petersburg Mayor, Rick Snyder and his son, Tom, have invited us to visit their Hill Prairie in Cass County. Rick has been working with Illinois Department of Natural Resources Heritage Division through the Hill Prairie Partnership to restore the prairie to its full glory. Ray Geroff, Heritage Division biologist describes Rick’s as a “really nice gem of a Hill Prairie and one of the most impressive places to see Indian paintbrush.” Unfortunately, we will probably miss the paintbrush, but we’ll have a great time observing other species that are at their peak bloom.

We will depart at 9:00 a.m. from the parking lot on Jackson Street behind Petersburg City Hall. Please arrive at the parking lot by 8:45 a.m. so we are ready to roll by 9:00 for the 20-25 minute drive to the site.

How to Dress:
Like an onion–layer up so you can adjust accordingly
Sturdy shoes/boots
Long pants recommended
Hat

What to Bring:
Drinking water
Walking stick — we’ll be climbing a hill
Insect repellent (please be courteous when applying a spray–stand away and downwind from others)
Sunscreen
Snacks

Note:
There are no restrooms at the site.
